Homebuyers who have dreamed of owning a wine country retreat could well get the chance to snap one up at a bargain price when a luxurious 700-acre estate that was once home to legendary “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek is put up for auction—with no reserve.

The extraordinary ranch property known as Windfall Farms, which is located in Paso Robles, CA, was owned by Trebek for 37 years, until he and several other investors sold it to its current owners for $1.6 million in 2001.

In the years since, those owners—Barry and Donna Goldfarb—have transformed it from a working winery into a sprawling family retreat, adding multiple structures, including a stunning primary residence.

They have made several attempts over the years to offload the sprawling estate, most recently listing the ranch for a staggering $33 million. However, they will now take their chances with what could be a much lower sale price when they put the property on the auction block with Concierge Auctions on Aug. 5.

Because Windfall Farms is being offered with no reserve, it will ultimately be sold to the highest bidder—unless, of course, it secures a buyer before the scheduled auction.

Luxury buyers looking to own a piece of TV history will soon have the chance to bid on a sprawling California ranch once owned by legendary “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, as the wine country estate heads to auction.Tri Motion Media

Luckily, there is plenty on offer to help push the price up.

Located along California’s Central Coast, the estate offers far more than celebrity provenance.

The current listing, which is held by Patty Murphy of Sotheby’s International Realty, describes Windfall Farms as a “world-class Central Coast development opportunity with positive cash flow,” emphasizing that it is as much an investment as it is a luxurious private retreat.

Trebek, who died in 2020 after battling pancreatic cancer, was part of a group of investors that owned the ranch for several years, reportedly helping to save it from bankruptcy, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Trebek—one of TV’s most recognizable personalities during his nearly four decades hosting “Jeopardy!”—also quietly built a reputation as an investor in California wine country, assembling several agricultural properties far from the bright lights of Hollywood. Windfall Farms reflects that passion.

According to the listing, the ranch “currently operates as a cashflow positive premium wine grape vineyard business,” with dozens of acres planted with sought-after varietals that thrive in Paso Robles’ Mediterranean climate.

The productive vineyards are complemented by mature olive groves, creating an estate that blends luxury living with a functioning agricultural enterprise.

The ranch’s equestrian amenities are equally impressive. The listing highlights its “stunning Kentucky-style equine facilities,” which include expansive horse barns, training areas, and a 6.5-furlong racetrack—a nod to the property’s origins as a thoroughbred breeding operation.

Those features help distinguish the estate from the typical celebrity home.

Instead of lavish entertainment spaces or oceanfront views, Windfall Farms offers hundreds of acres of rolling hills, open pasture, and productive farmland.

The sprawling grounds provide exceptional privacy while also creating opportunities for horseback riding, hiking, and outdoor recreation, making the ranch well suited for buyers seeking both a luxury lifestyle and long-term investment potential.

Its location only adds to its appeal.

Over the past two decades, Paso Robles has emerged as one of California’s fastest-growing wine destinations, attracting boutique wineries, upscale resorts, and affluent buyers drawn to the region’s scenic landscapes and acclaimed vineyards.

The area has developed an international reputation for producing Rhône and Bordeaux-style wines, helping fuel demand for large vineyard estates like Windfall Farms.

The auction also reflects a growing trend across the luxury housing market, where sellers of distinctive, high-value properties are increasingly turning to competitive bidding to reach a global pool of qualified buyers.

Concierge Auctions says bidding is scheduled to begin on Aug. 5 before concluding on Aug. 15 during RM Sotheby’s Monterey Car Week, placing the estate in front of an international audience of luxury collectors and investors.

While Windfall Farms remains one of Trebek’s most notable former properties, it is not the only ranch tied to the beloved TV host.

Earlier this year, another former estate connected to Trebek returned to the market in nearby Creston.

The historic 577-acre property, which he once owned alongside a group of investors, includes producing vineyards, multiple residences, livestock facilities, and event spaces, underscoring his longstanding appreciation for California’s agricultural landscapes.

Taken together, the properties reveal a side of Trebek that many fans never saw.

Rather than building a portfolio centered on glamorous Hollywood mansions, he gravitated toward expansive ranches where vineyards, horses, and open space took center stage.
