ENGIE has announced plans to expand its European battery energy storage systems (BESS) portfolio with the acquisition of two projects in Spain totalling 278MW and the start of construction on a 110MW facility in France.

The additions take the company’s BESS capacity in Europe to more than 1GW when combined with 700MW already operating or being built across eight countries.

In Spain, ENGIE has bought two stand-alone BESS projects under development in Andalusia: a 78MW/312MW-hour (MWh) facility in Álora and a 200MW/800MWh facility in Tarifa.

Each project will enable up to four hours of storage and include synchronous condensers to provide inertia and manage reactive power on the grid.

Construction is due to begin in 2027, with phased commissioning in 2028.

ENGIE operates 1.8GW of renewable generation in Spain.

In France, ENGIE has broken ground on its first battery storage project at Castelnau d’Aude in the Aude department.

The two-hectare site near a grid connection point will comprise 51 modules with a total capacity of 110MW/220MWh, able to store and discharge electricity for up to two hours.

The company targets commissioning in summer 2027.

ENGIE has 5.3GW of installed solar and onshore wind capacity in France.

The company’s BESS developments form part of its objective to reach 95GW of renewable and storage capacity by 2030.

ENGIE Renewable & Flexible Power senior executive vice-president Paulo Almirante said: “These storage projects address a key challenge of the energy transition: combining growth in renewable energy with the stability of the electricity system.

“They strengthen ENGIE’s ability to provide its customers with reliable, decarbonised and affordable electricity.”

Beyond Spain and France, ENGIE is developing BESS projects in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and the UK.

In February 2026, ENGIE agreed to acquire electricity distribution network operator UK Power Networks for an equity value of €12.06bn ($14.09bn).

“ENGIE to expand European BESS portfolio with projects in Spain and France” was originally created and published by Power Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
