Red Dead Redemption joined the Netflix gaming catalog on Tuesday, a great moment for fans of the franchise as it marks the first time the game is officially available on iOS and Android devices.

Players with a Netflix subscription can now download the game, which features mobile-friendly controls, including touch-screen shooting and navigation. It’s important to note that the game does not feature a multiplayer mode and players must be connected to the internet to play; offline gameplay is not available.

Originally released by Rockstar Games in 2010, Red Dead Redemption is set in the year 1911 during the Wild West era. Players assume the role of John Marston, a former outlaw searching for his kidnapped family. The mobile version includes the standalone expansion pack, “Undead Nightmare,” which follows Marston as he faces a zombie outbreak.

The inclusion of Red Dead Redemption in Netflix’s gaming lineup is a significant addition to its gaming strategy, especially considering that Netflix has faced challenges in previous years with fewer than 1% of its subscriber base engaging with the available games. The company’s investment in the space finally showed signs of growth in 2024, when estimates showed that Netflix Games downloads increased 180% year-over-year.

Red Dead Redemption is one of Rockstar’s most popular franchises, second only to the iconic Grand Theft Auto series. The game has attracted a dedicated base, and some players have been speculating that a prequel might be announced soon. The newly launched mobile game could potentially generate renewed interest in the franchise.

The launch comes on the heels of Netflix’s introduction of games on smart TVs in October. Subscribers can use their phones as controllers to play a collection of party titles, including Boggle Party, LEGO Party!, and Pictionary.

The rollout also occurs just two years after Netflix introduced Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy into its mobile game catalog. However, GTA: San Andreas will leave Netflix Games on December 12, marking the last day subscribers can enjoy the title.
