    The world of celebrity real estate is a heady place, one that is filled with glittering megamansions, luxury developments, and buzz-worthy listings. But there is also a much darker side to this gleaming industry, one plagued by scandal, backlash, and a very hefty dose of uproar.

    In recent years, there has been no shortage of headlines about these dramas, the most recent of which centers around first daughter Ivanka Trump‘s plans to build a $1.4 billion resort on an island in Albania, a project that has sparked furious protests among locals.

    Together with her husband, Jared Kushner, Ivanka is aiming to transform Sazan, a former Soviet weapon’s base, into a 10,000-room hotel, complete with every high-end amenity the richest and most privileged travelers could ever imagine.

    But the plans have been met with outrage from the people of Albania, who have turned out in the thousands to protest the development in recent days.

    However, the couple are far from the only high-profile figures to have found themselves at the center of a real estate scandal, instead joining the likes of pop star Katy Perry, rapper Kanye West, and developer Mohamed Hadid, all of whom have courted controversy with their own property moves in recent years.

    As the tension surrounding the Trump-Kushner project continues to build, Realtor.com® lifts the lid on that drama—and the other well-documented scandals to have blighted the world of A-list real estate.

    It was first revealed in 2024 that President Donald Trump‘s daughter and her spouse were set to invest $1.4 billion into turning an abandoned Soviet weapons base, known as Sazan, into a luxury island resort.

    Ivanka, 44, and Kushner, 45, who both served as senior advisers in Trump’s first administration but opted not to rejoin it after his 2024 election win, took a massive step toward their dream of creating the “extraordinary” retreat in January 2025, when their plans received preliminary approval from the Albanian government, according to The New York Times.

    That approval came just two months after Ivanka’s father claimed victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, and days before he was inaugurated for the second time, with the outlet noting that the project is “one of several” involving members of the president’s family and foreign government entities that Trump would be actively working with in the White House.

    Both Kushner and a spokesperson for the Albanian government had previously shut down any suggestion that the project’s evaluation process would be in any way influenced by its direct connection to President Trump—however, that hasn’t stopped questions from being raised over the approval.

    The Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) has since opened an official inquiry into decisions made in 2024, when the protected status of the land earmarked for the resort was altered, thereby opening it up to development.

    Concerns are being raised about how Ivanka and Kushner’s proposed resort—which is understood to include a planned 10,000 hotel rooms—will impact local wildlife, particularly the flamingos, seals, and sea turtles that live in an area of coastal wetland.

    Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has since denied that the project will have any negative effect on wildlife, telling local lawmakers that the final proposal for the resort has not yet been submitted, the outlet states.

    Meanwhile, Albanian locals have made their opinions clear as they have taken to the streets to protest the project.

    On June 2, images and video emerged of groups of protesters clashing with security guards at the site of the project, while others took part in a demonstration staged in the country’s capital of Tirana, where people were heard chanting “cancel the project” and “Ivanka, go home,” according to The Times of Israel.

    At the same time, Ivanka touted the couple’s plans for the resort, telling podcast host David Senra during a May 31 interview that she and Kushner are hoping to create a “masterpiece” on the island, while insisting that they are acting with the utmost “restraint and care” to protect the natural landcsape.

    “I’m working on an incredible project with my husband in the Mediterranean. It’s massive in scale,” she said. “It’s an unbelievable, beautiful 1,400-hectare private island in the middle of the Mediterranean.

    “Over the course of many years, we developed the opportunity to help realize its potential and transform it, but with a lot of restraint and care, because the land is so beautiful that, really the architecture has to be fully integrated into it, almost rise from it.”

    Despite Rama noting that the final proposal for the resort has not yet been officially submitted, Ivanka stated that she and her husband have already started working with several top architects, whom she described as “some of the greatest masters that exist,” although she did not reveal their identities.

    She did, however, call attention to their “integrity,” vowing that the resulting resort will be built to last for many years to come.

    Rapper Kanye West was also pulled into the spotlight for his real estate ventures, specifically his former Malibu beach house, which he attempted to transform into a bunker project.

    West, 49, purchased the Tadao Ando-designed beach dwelling for the staggering price of $57.3 million in September 2021, before hiring a rare-record dealer named Tony Saxon—who is not a licensed contractor—to carry out a gut renovation of the home.

    Within months, almost all of the fixtures inside the property had been torn out, including the windows and all interior finishes, as well as the electric and plumbing, a move that sparked outrage among architecture buffs, who slammed West for destroying such a significant property.

    West further fueled that outrage in January 2024, when he put the gutted dwelling on the market for $53 million, having seemingly abandoned his plans to turn the home into a kind of modernist bunker—but not before Saxon filed a 2023 lawsuit against him, alleging that he sustained several injuries while working on the home, including a broken neck.

    That suit was then heard in court, where a lawyer for Saxon aired a very bizarre allegation about West’s unusual demands for the property—namely that all of its toilets be ripped out.

    “He wanted no toilets,” attorney Ron Zambrano stated, according to Rolling Stone, adding: “If people had to go No. 2, it was a hole in the ground.”

    Zambrano added that West had told his client—who claimed he is owed around $1 million in unpaid wages and expenses for the project—he wanted to turn the property into an “off-the-grid shelter.”

    West denied the allegations, arguing that Saxon was an independent contractor who misrepresented his qualifications. His representatives also disputed claims regarding unpaid wages and working conditions.

    The residence, which had been reduced to a bare concrete shell, eventually sold to developer Steven “Bo” Belmont for $21 million.

    Belmont initially planned to restore the home before later exploring new investment and ownership opportunities for the architecturally significant property.

    West purchased the beach house just months after he split from his former wife, Kim Kardashian—and it was suggested by some of the rapper’s critics that he had chosen to gut the property to jab at his ex-partner, who is known to be an avid fan of Ando’s work.

    When it was put on the market, the home had no electric, no plumbing, no windows, and no interior finishes, all of which had been stripped out during West’s “renovations.”

    So it came as no surprise that West was unable to secure anything close to his original asking price.

    Mohamed Hadid’s megamansion nightmare

    The father of supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid became embroiled in a string of legal woes over his failed $40 million Los Angeles megamansion.

    The 1.2-acre site hit the auction block in May 2025 revealing that all that remains of Hadid’s former mansion is a foundation and a few slabs of concrete—along with planning approval to built an opulent dwelling that spans up to 15,000 square feet.

    Despite the torrid history of the home that once sat on the land, the listing described the property as a “rare and exceptional development opportunity” to hold space in one of “Los Angeles’ most prestigious and desirable neighborhoods.”

    Hadid began construction on his own property on the plot back in 2012, laying the groundwork for a home that would ultimately span 30,000 square feet—double the size that planning permits allowed for on the plot.

    The initial work on the dwelling revealed the floor plan to be so vast that the home was nicknamed the “Starship Enterprise” by horrified neighbors, who quickly voiced upset over the dwelling’s expansive size.

    By 2015, the size of the home became the focal point of a furious legal dispute, when the city of Los Angeles prosecuted Hadid for refusing to adhere to the halt work orders that had been issued on the property.

    Three years later, Hadid had yet to downsize the property, prompting his neighbors to file a civil lawsuit against him, raising fears that the mansion could slide down from its perch on the hillside and cause major damage to the entire community.

    The lawsuit claimed that the home had been illegally built, was not up to code, and that it was unstable, with a structural engineer testifying in court that the home’s support piles had only been driven 20 feet into the ground, instead of the 30 feet that is required by building regulations.

    In 2019, a judge ordered Hadid to tear down the property, stating that the dwelling posed “a clear and present” threat to his neighbors.

    “If this house came down the hill it would take a portion of the neighborhood with it,” Judge Craig Karlan said of his ruling, according to the New York Post.

    Hadid made multiple attempts to appeal the ruling—and in 2019, he even filed for bankruptcy on behalf of the LLC through which he purchased the plot, claiming that his company was facing $10 million to $50 million in debt because of the construction costs involved in the failed project.

    In 2021, he opted to sell the property to Sahara Construction for $8.5 million, rather than pay the $5 million required to safely demolish the home—a cost that the buyer agreed to cover.

    The construction firm then took out an $8 million loan from Northern Bank & Trust Company in 2023 and completed the requirements to stabilize the slope.

    Things went from bad to worse for Hadid when he was ordered to pay a lump sum of $2.6 million toward his neighbors’ legal costs in 2023.

    At the time, Joe Horacek, 81, who was one of the neighbors who led the suit, told the Daily Mail of the ruling: “I feel vindicated. Now I just want Hadid to pay up and go away.”

    Meanwhile, Hadid lamented, “This is a joke—it’s crazy.”

    He then revealed he had plans to countersue for “two or three hundred million dollars.”

    Although the property was initially listed for $18 million in October 2023, it was then swiftly removed from the market.

    Katy Perry’s legal fight over Montecito mansion

    Singer Katy Perry spent years embroiled in a bitter legal battle over a Montecito estate she and ex Orlando Bloom agreed to purchase from veteran Carl Westcott in 2020 for $15 million.

    Just days after the deal was signed, Westcott attempted to back out, claiming he had been under the influence of painkillers and was of “unsound mind” when he agreed to the sale.

    The dispute dragged on for four years before a judge ruled in Perry and Bloom’s favor in December 2023, officially granting them ownership of the property.

    The controversy intensified when Perry sought millions in damages, alleging lost rental income and repair costs while Westcott remained in possession of the home.

    Although she initially sought nearly $5 million, a judge ultimately awarded her roughly $1.84 million, which was deducted from the remaining balance still owed to Westcott for the property.

    The case drew criticism from Westcott’s family, who accused Perry of showing “zero empathy” toward the ailing homeowner, who suffers from Huntington’s disease.

    Speaking to Realtor.com after the judgment was made public, Westcott’s son, Chart Westcott, thanked the court for rejecting Perry’s “most egregious claims for damages,” while hitting out at the pop star for “her relentless pursuit of [his] dying father.

    “We respect the court and the process, and are pleased that Katy Perry’s most egregious claims for damages were rejected,” he said, before hinting that his family is weighing further options in terms of an appeal.

    “Nevertheless, we fundamentally disagree with key aspects of the decision. We are carefully evaluating our options going forward.

    “It is in poor taste and humanity that Katy Perry continues her relentless pursuit of my dying father all over money and a house she will never live in.”

    During a 2025 court hearing, Perry also revealed that the Montecito estate is technically owned by Bloom through an LLC named after their daughter, Daisy Dove.

    While Perry acknowledged she did not contribute funds toward the purchase, she testified that the property was of “good financial interest” to her and that she stood to benefit financially from the outcome of the litigation.
