    Key takeaways

    • Albuquerque offers affordable living with tax-friendly perks.
    • Over 1,500 healthcare facilities give retirees peace of mind.
    • Rich culture and outdoor recreation create a balanced retirement lifestyle.
    • Strong social networks and retiree-friendly communities thrive here.

Retirees today are prioritizing one thing above all else: access to high-quality healthcare. In a recent analysis of top retirement destinations, Albuquerque, New Mexico, stands out with more than 1,500 healthcare facilities—22 of those being hospitals in the county. Additionally, Albuquerque is an affordable place to live, offers much in the way of entertainment and arts, and is located in proximity to an international airport, making it one of the most attractive options in the country for retirees.

Why Healthcare Access Matters in Retirement

As people get older, routine checkups, visits to specialists, and surgical procedures become a bigger part of life. In smaller towns or rural areas, accessing this level of care often means long drives to a larger city. But in Albuquerque, retirees gain the peace of mind that comes from knowing a large network of care is nearby. With several hospitals, urgent care centers, and medical specialists, the city stands out as a hub where healthcare is easily accessible.

Healthcare in This Top Retirement Town

Albuquerque offers over 1,500 healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, urgent care, and specialists. The city is home to seven Medicare-rated hospitals and a plethora of medical providers, making it easy for retirees to make appointments and obtain timely care.

Cost of Living & Taxes for Retirees

Affordability is another factor that makes Albuquerque a good option. Housing prices are lower than the national average, while groceries, utilities, and healthcare also fall below many major retirement hubs. The median home value in Albuquerque is $268,500, whereas the median home sales price in the US is over $410,000, indicating that this city offers affordability– which is especially important to those on a fixed income.

As for taxes, living in New Mexico is not as advantageous for seniors as some locations. That’s because Social Security income and withdrawals from an IRA, 401(k) or pension are considered taxable income. Recently though, a law was enacted exempting single tax filers earning less than $100,000 and married tax filers earning under $150,000 from paying income tax on Social Security.

This has greatly reduced the amount of tax that retirees pay. Coupled with a 12% lower cost of living than the national average, that makes Albuquerque a very attractive option.

    Lifestyle Beyond Healthcare

Albuquerque offers retirees more than great healthcare, it provides many options for seniors. The city’s Department of Senior Affairs offers services such as meal delivery, transportation, and in-home support. Multiple senior and multigenerational centers host arts classes, social activities, and computer labs. Fitness is also a priority, with many sports programs, gyms, group classes, and outdoor activities. Whether enjoying cultural events or staying active, retirees can benefit from a community designed specifically for retirees.

    The Bottom Line

Albuquerque is a destination where retirees can thrive. With exceptional healthcare access and affordability, it offers peace of mind and a vibrant community where retirees will find many programs centered around seniors. For those weighing where to spend their golden years, Albuquerque stands out as a smart, well-rounded choice.
