    Key Takeaways

    • One of Oneida County’s most popular leisure activities is riding the Adirondack Railroad, with numerous other excursions tailored to personal interests.

    • The county’s Office for Aging & Continuing Care provides several helpful services to seniors.

    • The state of New York imposes a high tax rate, but the cost of living in Oneida County is below the national average.

Tucked between Albany and Syracuse in central New York State, Oneida County enjoys a rich and storied history. The county was established by the New York State Legislature back in 1798, and it captured international attention in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly from Europe, thanks to the abundance of furry animals in its expansive woodlands.

Oneida County boasts a population of 229,645 with a median age of 40.8, so roughly half of Oneida’s population is either eying retirement or enjoying it to its fullest.

    The Great Outdoors

Without leaving your seat, you can take in the beautiful Oneida County and surrounding New York countryside. Utica, one of Oneida’s major cities and its county seat, is home to the Adirondack Railroad covering a 70-mile track. About 70,000 people per year enjoy its multiple excursions, often based on holiday and seasonal themes. The railroad also connects with boat tours and hiking trails if you want to get outside to enjoy the fresh air.

Some of its popular rides include the Polar Express, the Fall Gateway, and the Beer & Wine Train, which also offers local entertainment.

Oneida’s Cities and What to Do There

Gambling is a favorite pastime in Oneida County, so this could be a fun place if you want to roll the dice or contemplate some cards in your newfound free time. The state tags this pastime as “the largest non-governmental, non-health care product of Oneida County.” The Turning Stone Casino Resort is hosted by the Oneida Indian Nation, and it’s the county’s largest private employer.

Oneida’s more sedate offerings for leisure time include taking in the incredible architecture of Union Station in Utica. Catch a show or two or more at the Stanley Center for the Arts, or visit the exhibitions offered by the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute. Utica also offers tours of the Matt Brewing Company if you want to enjoy a little craft-brewed beer.

All told, Oneida County offers 90 entertainment and arts establishments, as of 2024 data. You should have plenty to do in your spare time here.

Getting Around and Out of Town(s)

Oneida County has long been considered traveler-friendly. Rome provided ground transportation between major waterways for people traveling west in the 19th century, as well as routes for the transportation of goods and physical property. The county is home to 3,262 miles of highway infrastructure as of 2025.

Oneida offers Griffiss International Airport if you want to get out of town and go some distance, perhaps if your family resides more than a convenient drive away.

Driving and flying aren’t options for all seniors, however, and the county stands by ready to help out if you’re one of them. The Office for Aging & Continuing Care provides transportation services to those age 60 or older who don’t receive Medicaid and who need access to medical care. Drivers are provided by the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

    Day Trip to Lake Ontario

Those who love the water can easily reach Lake Ontario, part of the Great Lakes and one of the largest lakes in the world. Public parks with access to the lake’s shoreline are a little more than an hour’s drive away from either Rome or Utica.

    Citizen Services and Health Care

The availability of quality health care can be a concern for seniors and is often a factor when considering relocation. Oneida County is home to 14 hospitals and 373 health care establishments, including Rome Memorial Hospital and Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare in Utica.

The county goes well beyond health care assistance for seniors, however. Oneida also provides help to those who find themselves raising or caring for a younger generation through its Grandparents & Kinship Caregivers program. It’s also provided by the Office for Aging & Continuing Care.

Its Bill Payer service will help you with guidance if you’re struggling to get a handle on your budget and finances, and the Legal Services Program stands by for those age 60 or older who can’t reasonably afford to pay for legal services. This program can assist with issues like wills, powers of attorney, health care proxies, and landlord/tenant problems.

How Much Will All This Cost You?

First, the bad news: The Economic Research Institute cites New York as imposing the ninth-highest state tax rate in the U.S. It taxes IRA, pension, and 401(k) income and withdrawals, but not Social Security benefits.

The overall cost of living in Utica and Rome is rather low, however. It’s 9% less than the national average in Utica and 3% less if you choose Rome. Food, housing, and health care expenses all fall below the U.S. average. The only cost that nudges up over average in both Oneida County cities is transportation. It runs about $1,197 a month in the county overall for two adults with no children.
