AT&T Data Breaches Explained
In March 2024, AT&T revealed that a dataset from 2019 or earlier, which included personal information like Social Security numbers (SSNs), was leaked on the dark web a few weeks earlier.
At the time, AT&T said it was “communicating proactively with those impacted” and estimated that it impacted approximately 7.6 million current account holders and roughly 65.4 million former account holders.
Just months later, AT&T announced another data breach.
In July 2024, the company revealed that in April 2024, they had learned that customer data was illegally downloaded from a third-party cloud platform they used, known as Snowflake.
According to the company, this data breach impacted nearly all AT&T cellular customers and the leaked data was primarily from customers’ cell and text records dating from May 1, 2022, to Oct. 31, 2022. Some customers had their phone records from Jan. 2, 2023 compromised, too.

What Happened Next?
After both data breaches occurred, there were multiple lawsuits filed against AT&T. Ultimately, the parties involved in both lawsuits filed a consolidated complaint in spring 2025.
In June 2025, a District Court judge gave preliminary approval of a settlement requiring AT&T to pay $177 million in total: $149 million for the data breach announced in March 2024 and $28 million for the breach revealed in July 2024.
While the settlement hasn’t been approved just yet, the court is set to determine final approval of the settlement on Dec. 3, 2025.

If your data was included in the AT&T 1 Data Incident—or the data breach announced in March 2024‚ there are two payment options you may be eligible for:
- The ‘Documented Loss Cash Payment’ is worth up to $5,000: To be eligible for this payment, you must provide documentation that you incurred losses in 2019 or later due to the AT&T 1 Data Incident.
- The ‘Tier Cash Payment’: There are two types of Tier Cash Payments. In order to be eligible for the ‘Tier 1 Cash Payment’, your Social Security number must have been compromised, too. Both Tier Cash Payments are based on a “pro rata” share of the AT&T 1 Net Settlement Fund, which means that the funds will be distributed proportionally, and will be calculated later based on factors like admin costs, attorney fees, and the total value of the claims received.
For the AT&T 2 Data Incident, which was announced in June 2024, impacted customers also have two payment options:
- The ‘Documented Loss Payment’ is worth up to $2,500: Customers need to submit documentation that they experienced losses on April 14, 2024, or later because of the incident.
- ‘Tier 3 Cash Payment’: These payments will be a “pro rata” share of the AT&T 2 Net Settlement Fund, which means that the funds will be distributed proportionally, and will be calculated later based on factors like the number of valid claims, the amount of attorney fees, and more.
Those who have been affected by both incidents are able to submit claims for both, but if you plan to apply for the ‘Documented Loss Cash Payments’ for each incident, you must provide different documentation for each claim you submit.
