    Name: Melaina Cano

    Firm: Merrill Wealth Management

    Location: Irvine, CA

    Team Assets (Custodied): $329 million

Background: Melaina Cano’s passion for investing was sparked early by her paternal grandfather, a first-generation Mexican American engineer who meticulously tracked his investments and taught her the value of financial literacy. Raised in Orange County, CA, she put herself through college earning a bachelor’s in Finance and Economics while working full-time jobs. After graduating, she began her career at Merrill Lynch as a client associate and advanced through their Advisor Development Program. Today, she leads her own small team which specializes in multi-generational family wealth management.

Building Relationships: “Our niche is family wealth management — we act as the bridge between generations, helping families preserve their legacy and communicate openly across age groups,” says Cano. Two key components of her process are hosting “family values” conversations to define core ideals with wealth creators, and “family education” meetings designed to introduce younger generations to the family’s financial landscape.

Competitive Edge: “Building a robust family profile and understanding family dynamics are as important as the financials,” says Cano. “Open communication is key — we help families have those sometimes difficult conversations so everyone feels prepared for wealth transfer before it happens.”

Investment Philosophy: Cano’s investment philosophy is grounded in disciplined fundamentals; She stresses diversification across asset classes, sectors, and geographies to manage risk and capture opportunities. Her client portfolios commonly blend separately managed accounts with ETFs to balance tax efficiency, customization, and cost-effectiveness—which is especially vital for her California-based clients. On alternatives, Cano adds: “We incorporate private equity, real estate, and credit strategies when it makes sense to reduce portfolio volatility and enhance income.”

Market Outlook: “Be prepared to capitalize on buying opportunities during short-term dips.” Recent tactical adjustments include extending fixed income duration to navigate the current interest rate environment and also employing tax-aware strategies like direct indexing as well as tax-loss harvesting for clients.

Best Advice: “Find a mentor and build a strong support system,” says Cano. “Surround yourself with people who align with your values and challenge you to grow.”

Off the Clock: Melaina is a mom to a young son and golden retriever puppy. She enjoys active family life, running, and baking muffins every Sunday with her son.
